While Tissamaharama is widely recognized as the gateway to Yala National Park, this charming town has much more to offer than just safari tours. Surrounded by lush landscapes, picturesque temples, and tranquil lakes, Tissa is a peaceful and culturally rich destination in its own right.
A 4x4 safari in Yala National Park is an unforgettable wildlife experience. The park is Sri Lanka’s most famous and biodiverse reserve and home to a wide variety of animals, including elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, which Yala boasts the highest density of in the world.
A 4x4 safari in Bundala National Park offers a peaceful and scenic alternative to the busier Yala NP, ideal for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Located along the southern coast, Bundala is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve known for its rich wetlands and lagoons that attract over 200 species of birds.
A large lake (reservoir) built in the 3rd century BC for irrigation and water supply, this is a great place for walking or biking along the banks to enjoy the scenery and bird life around the lake. You will likely see locals taking a bath but don't be tempted to swim here as crocodiles are sometimes spotted.
A visit to Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara offers a serene and culturally rich experience at one of the most important and ancient Buddhist temples in southern Sri Lanka. Dominated by a massive white stupa (dagoba) that rises above the surrounding landscape, the temple is believed to date back to the 3rd century BCE and is said to have been sanctified by Lord Buddha himself.
A visit to Sandagiri Vehera Dagoba offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path glimpse into Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist heritage. This partially restored stupa dates back over 2,000 years and was once part of a larger monastic complex. Often uncrowded, it gives visitors a peaceful setting to explore the weathered brick structure, surrounding ruins, and nearby stone inscriptions.
A visit to Sithulpawwa Rock Temple is a journey into both spiritual serenity and ancient history, set deep within the Yala wilderness. Perched atop a rocky hill, this 2,200-year-old Buddhist monastery offers sweeping views over the surrounding jungle and is rich with rock-cut caves, ancient stupas, stone inscriptions, and serene meditation spots once used by monks.
A short drive (20-30 minutes) from Debarawewa you will find Kirinda Beach where the sand is golden and the rocky outcrops can create pools that are calmer for swimming. Perched on the hilltop above Kirinda beach is Kirinda Temple a Buddhist shrine, which includes a stupa and huge standing Buddha.
A visit to the Tissamaharama markets offers a vibrant glimpse into daily Sri Lankan life, filled with color, aroma, and local character. These bustling markets—especially active in the mornings—are where locals shop for fresh produce, spices, fruits, vegetables, fish, and household goods.
A visit to the Debarawewa markets offers an authentic, local experience where you can see the rhythms of life in a small Sri Lankan town. Less touristy than nearby Tissamaharama, this market is where residents come to buy their everyday essentials. It’s a great stop for travelers who enjoy local immersion.
Tissamaharama is firmly rooted in Sri Lankan culture, so rice and curry is king. Tissamaharama is not as westernised as coastal cities like Galle or Unawatuna, but you’ll still find a handful of restaurants offering Western or fusion options.
